You realise, of course, the people who should be reading your post won't see it, because they don't go to /r/montreal at the moment. By the time they do, your post will no longer be on the subreddit's main page. The "you guys" you are talking to are the /r/montreal regulars, and they don't need to ask about activities.

In short, while you are totally right, this self post you've made will be of very limited use. All we can do is tell future visitors to read the side bar and redirect them to /r/VisitMontreal.

Also, I'm sure plenty of visitors do exactly as you suggest, and use the search function. You just don't notice them, because they don't post anything. Obviously.

No one reads the sidebar... :(

Maybe put it temporarily as an announcement (between the logo and the article titles) and see what happens?

[–]jkb83 1 point2 points ago

We could, I'll ask our programming wizard mod

[–]GotNoob 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, I'll see what I can do.

:D

Done, I added the text on the submit a new link page.

[–]Cayou 0 points1 point ago

Nice! You might also wanna add "...and/or have a look at the suggestions in the side bar" to the current message.

[–]GotNoob 1 point2 points ago

Done.

S’IL VOUS PLAÎT!!! Ne le faites pas pour qu’il soit sur deux lignes et cache le titre du fil!!!!

Merci!

There's nothing in the sidebar answering the all-important "Do I need to speak French to live in Montreal?"

[–]Cayou 4 points5 points ago

We should let jeannaimard write a blurb about that.

Put up a banner in the new theme:

"READ THE FUCKING SIDEBAR, TABARNAK"

[–]elimi 5 points6 points ago

Same reason people post any question when that posts question could have gone into a google search bar and given them an answer 30 times faster.

Think it's a validation thing most of the time.

Might I suggest putting together a list of suggested itineraries (in addition to the free activities guide, and /r/VisitMontreal), similar to what /r/Vancouver has done:

snapshot

It has really helped cut down the amount of posts about "I'm visiting Vancouver, what is there to do?"

They also cover the perennial "Where are the best places to eat?" with their "All the best places to eat!" link.

The sidebar will be revamped à la /r/Chicago style.

[–]daedhel 7 points8 points ago

Ben, si le monde les downvotait, on les verrais pas! Moi je me demande pourquoi ces posts-là sont pas downvotés...

An non j'avais pas remarqué, c'est poche ca!

Ya des cons partout...

[–]3hirty6ix 3 points4 points ago

But then how do we piss off jeanaimard?

[–]ryanisleet 0 points1 point ago

Although not too many people actually read it, I'd suggest a FAQ link right on the top of the sidebar? Might help out a few people that would post a new topic otherwise. Reddit's search function can be terrible sometimes.

Edit: or even a link somewhere on the new header as it's bigger, might catch peoples attention more than sidebar text.

Meh, it adds a bit of life to the subreddit if anything. I generally just skip through them and don't lose sleep over it.

[–]iorgfeflkd 1 point2 points ago

That would be a good idea but people on the internet don't do that sort of thing. I also mod /r/askscience and we'd have like 10% the traffic if people used the damn search.

[–]GotNoob 1 point2 points ago

I didn't want to add a text on each page so I went with this solution: on the "submit a link page" I added a little text on the reddit field.

I hope it will be Ok.

[–]babydinomtl[S] -2 points-1 points ago

i noticed that while making a post. I'm pleasantly surprised anyone actually listened to my little comment even more surprised someone did something about it.

[–]babydinomtl[S] 0 points1 point ago

although jeanaimard is probably going to say you need to add a french version. you know, bill 101 and shit.

[–]Unfa 1 point2 points ago

Are you kidding? My question is a lot more important than what has been answered so far.

[–]manmalade 0 points1 point ago

I can't believe people are still asking what there is to do in Montreal.

[–]jeni_cote 1 point2 points ago

You mean use the search?

That's crazy-talk! /s
